How It Works

Washington and Lee has partnered with PBC Guru to create a virtual book club for our alumni family, faculty, and staff. The book club will connect through a private forum where all participants can discuss the current book and converse with each other. Joining is completely free, but you’ll need to BYOB (bring your own book). We’ll read one selection every two months, so you will have plenty of time for each book.

Why Join

1. Pursue Lifelong Learning: Our facilitated book club will provide new insights into the world today through a shared intellectual adventure. Together we’ll find welcome companionship as we explore the world of literature, history, and current events with compatible minds and diverse perspectives. As always, the journey involves a lot of fun!
2. Connect with the W&L Community: The W&L book club will connect you with members of the W&L community, including the W&L faculty. You’ll enjoy new opportunities for friendships with intelligent people who have W&L in common.
3. Reading is Healthy: Reading can reduce stress, help you sleep better, and improve relationships. Reading increases verbal and emotional intelligence, and inspires creativity.

The Books

Below are a few examples of the kind of books the group may read. We will vote between several options each period and select a book based on reader interests.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often will new books be chosen?

We plan to read one new book every two months.

How will the book club meet?

The book club meetings will be entirely online. You can participate anywhere you have Internet access and on days and times that are convenient to you.

Is there any cost to participate and how do I obtain a book?

The book club is free to all W&L participants. Books are available through your local library, or retail agencies.

How do book club discussions work?

The W&L book club will have a moderator from PBC Guru who manages the online forum. The moderator will pose questions to the book club, share relevant articles and facilitate conversations. Members will be encouraged to post and share their thoughts and questions as well. This format allows for ongoing conversations and makes it easy for readers to connect with each other through our online forum.

How do I join the book club forum?

We're using a private forum to host our virtual book club so that connections with fellow participants are both easy and safe. During our registration process, you will enter your information to auto-generate your free profile. After you complete the registration, we'll send you a link to the forum. You can begin to post immediately!
