How It Works

We have partnered with the University of Sydney to create a virtual book club for alumni, covering a variety of genres (as voted by members!). The book club will connect through a private forum where all participants can discuss the current book and connect with each other. Joining is completely free; you just have to get a copy of the book to enjoy. The book club will read one book every two months so that you will have plenty of time for each book.

Why Join

1. Connect with fellow alumni: Our book club will introduce you to fellow alumni across industries, generations, and geographies all whilst gaining different perspectives whilst reading the book. Book clubs are a great way to establish a sense of community with other readers. You can spend hours chatting with people across the globe who love the same authors as you, or debating about the merits of a particular character or book themes.
2. Embrace lifelong learning: Being part of a book club naturally introduces you to new genres and styles that you might never have picked yourself. Not only does this increase the amount of material you might read in the future, it also allows you to gain new perspectives and broadens your horizons.
3. Reading is Good for You: Reading can reduce stress, help you sleep better, and improve your relationships [1]. Did we mention it also makes you smarter, improves writing, vocabulary, emotional intelligence and boosts creativity? [2]. Importantly, joining a book club gives you a dedicated reason to read on a more regular basis.

The Books

Below are a few examples of the kind of books the group may read. We will vote between several options each period and select a book based on reader interests.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often will books be read, what is the time commitment and what are the expectations?

We plan to start the book club by reading one book every two months. Each week the moderator will pose discussions point and conversation starters. The reading cycle will provide plenty of time to engage with the discussion as you progress through the book.

Will there be any in-person meetings of the book club?

No, the book club will be entirely online. You can participate anywhere you have Internet access and on days and times that are convenient to you.

Is there any cost to participate?

Participation is entirely FREE for all alumni.

How do I get the books?

Book club members can borrow books from their local library or self purchase.

How do book club discussions work?

The book club will have a moderator from PBC Guru who manages the forum where discussions occur online. The moderator will pose questions to the book club, share relevant articles and facilitate conversation about topics in the book. Members will be encouraged to post and share as well. This format allows for ongoing conversation and makes it easy for readers to connect with each other through the forum.

How do I make a forum profile?

We're using a private forum to host the virtual book club so it's easy to connect with fellow alumni. During our sign up process, you will enter the information to auto-generate your free profile. After you complete the sign up, we'll send you a link to the forum and you can begin to post right away!
